Bracken fern is widespread in North America. It is common in dry, sandy pine or oak forests, especially if the canopy is thin, and partial sunlight reaches the ground layer. Bracken fern also occurs in a variety of other woodlands, woods edges, and logged areas. It spreads aggressively by rhizomes, especially in light soil.
